Temporary Observation Unit

The Temporary Observation Unit provides a secure setting with medical monitoring for individuals experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis. The unit offers further evaluation and short-term stabilization for stays of up to 24 hours. 

During their stay, individuals receive support from a team of medical and behavioral health professionals. The team focuses on safety, assessment, and deciding the most appropriate next level of care.

Services May Include:

Psychiatric evaluation and treatment

  • Nursing assessments and medical monitoring
  • Medication support and management
  • Crisis intervention and help calming the situation
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation and therapeutic activities
  • Case management and care coordination
  • Peer support from individuals with lived experience
  • Monitoring for withdrawal symptoms when needed
  • Discharge planning and connection to continued care

Success in the Temporary Observation Unit

Success may include improved stability, a clear assessment of the individual’s needs, and a supported plan for what comes next. The goal is to connect each individual with the services and resources needed for continued recovery and safety
