Supported Employment for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Aspire’s Supported Employment Services help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities overcome barriers to meaningful, competitive integrated employment (CIE). The program supports individuals who have experienced job loss, underemployment, or long periods without work and who have employment listed as a goal in their Individual Support Plan (ISP).
The program helps individuals build the skills, confidence, and support needed to find and keep a job. The goal is to help each individual become more independent and take an active role in the community.
Competitive Integrated Employment
Competitive integrated employment means working in a setting where individuals with disabilities work alongside individuals without disabilities. Employees earn at least minimum wage and have access to the same benefits and opportunities for advancement as other employees.
Employment may include:
- Full-time or part-time work
- Self-employment
- Jobs that pay at least minimum wage
- Positions with benefits similar to those offered to other employees
Job opportunities are matched to each individual’s strengths, interests, and goals. Employer needs and the preferences of the individual are also considered.

Supported Employment Services provide ongoing support throughout the employment process.

Customized Employment and Discovery
Customized employment is a flexible, person-centered process that matches an individual’s skills with the needs of an employer. Aspire staff trained through the Association for Community Rehabilitation Educators (ACRE) provide this service.
Discovery is an important part of customized employment. It is a work assessment process that focuses on the individual’s strengths, interests, abilities, and preferences. The goal is to help the individual find meaningful employment and receive the support needed for long-term success.
Building Independence Through Employment
Success may include keeping a job, increasing financial independence, building confidence, and developing a stronger sense of purpose. By connecting individuals with real job opportunities and ongoing support, Aspire helps them build meaningful careers and more independent lives.
Measuring Success
Success may include greater independence, stronger work skills, and the ability to use what was learned in everyday life. Individuals leave the program with more confidence, a stronger sense of purpose, and tools to take the next step toward employment and self-sufficiency.
